Gonzo's Legacy: The Zack Defreitas Project Launches to Help Underprivileged Kids in the Hockey Community

Springfield, IL - Gonzo's Legacy, a central Illinois based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged kids in the hockey community, officially launched today. Founded in memory of Zack Defreitas, a beloved friend, teammate and broadcaster, the organization is committed to carrying on his legacy of generosity, kindness, and a passion for hockey.

The primary mission of Gonzo's Legacy is to provide young athletes with the resources they need to succeed both on and off the ice. The organization believes that every child should have the opportunity to play the sport they love, regardless of their financial circumstances.

"In addition to supporting local youth, The Zack Defreitas Project aims to raise awareness about colorectal cancer and encourage young people to get screened for this preventable disease," said Kenneth Jackson, President of Gonzo's Legacy. "We believe that early detection can save lives, and we are committed to educating people about the importance of regular screening and preventative measures."

"We are thrilled to officially launch Gonzo's Legacy and begin our mission of fulfilling Zack's legacy while helping underprivileged kids play the game that he loved," said Brad Defreitas, Zack's older brother and Treasurer of Gonzo's Legacy. "Our goal is to create a community of support for these young athletes, and to provide them with the resources they need to succeed both in hockey and in life."

Gonzo's Legacy offers financial aid and scholarship programs to break down barriers that prevent kids from accessing the sport of hockey. The organization provides equipment, ice time, coaching, and mentorship to kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate. Interested parties can nominate potential scholarship recipients via an application process on the non-profit's website.

Additionally, the nonprofit prioritizes the development of life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance through its programs.

"We believe that hockey is a powerful vehicle for teaching important life lessons and helping kids reach their full potential both on and off the ice," said Defreitas. "Through community outreach and education, we aim to break down barriers and provide young athletes with the resources they need to succeed while also promoting preventive care."

Gonzo's Legacy is excited to begin its mission of helping underprivileged kids in the youth hockey community and raise preventative awareness about colorectal cancer. The organization welcomes donations and volunteers who share its mission and vision.
