Gonzo's Legacy Celebrates Success of 1st Annual Skate For A Cure, Announces Partnership with Springfield Youth Hockey Association
Springfield, Illinois – September 25, 2023 – Gonzo's Legacy: The Zack Defreitas Project is thrilled to announce the outstanding results of its 1st Annual Skate For A Cure, a 3v3 hockey tournament held on September 23rd, 2023, at The Nelson Center. This event, dedicated to the memory of Zack Defreitas, exceeded all expectations, attracting over 75 skaters and forming 13 teams for an exciting afternoon of hockey.
The tournament achieved remarkable success, raising over $20,000 for charity. The generosity of the participants, along with the support of local businesses, was evident in the silent auction, which featured over 50 items with a total value of $6,500. The silent auction generated over $3,600 in additional funds, contributing significantly to the overall success of the event.
Kenneth Jackson, President of Gonzo's Legacy, expressed his gratitude, stating, "We are overwhelmed by the incredible response to our first annual Skate For A Cure. The hockey community came together in a powerful way, showing their commitment to our cause. Our aim has always been to remove barriers to entry for young hockey enthusiasts, and this event allowed us to take a substantial step toward achieving that goal."
In a strategic move to expand their impact, Gonzo's Legacy has formed a partnership with the Springfield Youth Hockey Association and the Springfield Park District. Together, they will sponsor a new equipment program for youth players entering the Learn To Skate and Learn To Play programs at The Nelson Center. This initiative is a direct result of the funds raised during the Skate For A Cure event.
Jackson commented on the partnership, stating, "We are proud to collaborate with the Springfield Youth Hockey Association and the Springfield Park District to create meaningful opportunities for young players. This partnership enables us to provide new equipment to any child eager to explore the sport of hockey, breaking down financial barriers and ensuring access for all."
Already, the impact is tangible, with new equipment orders pouring in. Gonzo's Legacy is excited about the potential to outfit numerous children with new hockey gear, creating lasting memories and fostering a love for the sport, all while honoring the memory of Zack Defreitas.
Looking ahead, Gonzo's Legacy is already gearing up for the 2nd Annual Skate For A Cure, scheduled for Saturday, July 27th, 2024. Jackson expressed enthusiasm, stating, "The success of this year's event has set the bar high, and we can't wait to see the continued support from our community in the years to come."
Gonzo's Legacy extends heartfelt thanks to all the local businesses, individuals, and volunteers who supported this worthy cause. Their time, contributions, and dedication have made a significant impact on the success of the 1st Annual Skate For A Cure and the broader mission of Gonzo's Legacy: The Zack Defreitas Project.
