Springfield, IL – July 30, 2024 – Gonzo's Legacy: The Zack Defreitas Project is thrilled to announce the incredible success of this year’s 2nd Annual Skate For A Cure 3v3 Hockey Tournament, which raised a record-breaking $22,034.04! This brings the total funds raised in memory of Zack Defreitas to an impressive $42,393.14 since the nonprofit’s inception in April of 2023.
 

All proceeds from this event will directly support Gonzo’s Legacy’s Free Equipment Program, in partnership with the Springfield Park District, providing new hockey equipment to underserved youth in our community. Additionally, funds will also be allocated toward colorectal cancer research right here in central Illinois. With these efforts, Gonzo’s Legacy continues to honor Zack’s passion for hockey and his courageous battle with colorectal cancer.
 

This year’s success also marks an exciting new commitment for Gonzo’s Legacy: a partnership with the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine to promote awareness and educate young people about the dangers of colorectal cancer. Together, we aim to emphasize the importance of early detection, particularly as colorectal cancer rates continue to rise among younger populations.

The hockey community and our supporters showed up in a big way, and we are proud to say that 100% of the funds raised are going directly back into our local community. With the partnerships we’ve established, we’re making a tangible impact in the lives of underserved youth and advancing the fight against colorectal cancer. We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who contributed to this cause.”
 

The 2024 Skate For A Cure featured a fun-filled day of hockey, community, and giving back, with a silent auction, raffles, and exciting activities like a 360 Photo Booth, generously donated by Springfield Photo Booth Rental. The funds raised through these efforts reflect the generosity of local businesses, individuals, and the broader community who believe in Gonzo’s mission.
